Thoughts

I was for many years John's colleague in running PPE at St. Edmund Hall, and was, like him, closely involved in the college's investment and financial life. He was always calm, innovative, and humorous, with a gift for finding the right word or phrase (perhaps especially important at admissions interviews). Also for remembering, & often keeping in touch with, people he had taught long ago. Others are better placed to speak of him as an Economist. But we were all impressed by the way in which he added expertise on China to his original & very different 'developing economies' interests. He also displayed great fortitude in continuing to travel & meet his many contacts in China even after his health problems had set in. And his work on 'happiness' and climate change shows how innovative & intellectually flexible he remained to the end. On top of all this, he was a really good artist - sometimes also a quirky one, as when he converted Queen's Lane (on which his college room looked out) into a Venetian canal with gondolas. So much to like, and to admire.

John was my doctoral supervisor in the 90s. I can still see his pencil mark scribbles on my chapter drafts. I think of him whenever I am editing a paper and the writer has inserted the word, ‘however,’ in the middle of a sentence or–heaven forbid–used ‘due to’ when ‘owing to’ would be correct. I think of his patience, generosity and wisdom often. When I am feeling disappointed in the work of someone under my supervision, I remember his extraordinary grace in the face of my own early efforts. I knew then, and know now, how fortunate I was that he chose to take me on as a student. John’s work proved over and over again the importance of education to development. He obviously understood the fundamental importance of good teaching because he took his responsibility to his students more seriously than anyone, in my observation. John left this world better than he found it, and I was privileged to have learned from him.

Remembering John's contribution to Teddy Hall life and to my development as a student and a person. I will always be grateful for the teachers and mentors that have blessed me with the power to reason -> the only gift I have ever needed to navigate my way through this world.
